Full brown leather binding has moderate wear- top front corner and bottom rear corners rubbed through- top one inch of spine joints split- spine coloring darkened- spine has 4 raised bands with gilt tooling and black leather title label. Modest soiling, has a good binding, no marks or notations to the text. Written on the front free endpaper in pencil is the name/date/place of Civil War Confederate Assistant Surgeon J.T.F. Cummings of the 68th Infantry Regiment, Gibsonville NC. A family heirloom that was carried by Cummings through the Civil War. Illustrated with 363 wood engravings by H.V. Carter.
